Walter Mains
$55.00 (excl. tax)
A peony of strength, poise, and lasting distinction. Introduced in 1957 by Walter Mains himself and later awarded the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1974, this hybrid stands as one of the finest red Japanese-type peonies.
The flowers open in midseason as bold, cup-shaped blooms, often compared to a tulip in form. Large, slightly incurving guard petals are a deep burgundy to mahogany red, rich and unfading. At the center sits a striking cluster of flattened staminodes—deep red brushed with golden edges—surrounding pale carpels delicately tipped in pink. The contrast is dramatic yet refined, giving the bloom depth and movement as it matures. Plants reach roughly 80–85 cm (about 33 inches) tall and are carried on strong, upright stems that require no staking. The plant forms a dependable, spreading bush with excellent garden presence and long-term reliability.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Walter Mains has a timeless authority in the garden. Its sculptural form, rich red tones, and unwavering strength make it a peony that never feels dated. It’s a variety that rewards close looking—and one that earns its reputation year after year.
