A centuries-old ancient cultivar reportedly dating back to the 1600s! It?s evident why this plant has been grown in Europe for hundreds of years when you see its showy, full double flowers that are reliably produced in number. This plant adds a great deal of garden value as it will be among the first double-flowering varieties to bloom. Flowers open in a medium pink colour, fading to lighter pink tones as colour pools towards the depths of the flower as blooms mature. Guard petals are well formed, nicely rounded and uniform, and exhibit a very interesting red streaking. The central ball of petals has an interesting texture created by petals that are irregularly notched; at times this can produce a spiky appearance. Carpels are revealed as the flowers fully open. Plants form a short to medium-height, pleasing, hemispherical dome with stems that are sufficient to carry the flowers under most conditions but benefit from support during rainy spells. The foliage is unique and beautiful, lobed and rounded. A unique opportunity to grow a living relic that comes with added garden utility of introducing early double flowering. One flower per stem.
