Late Windflower
$120.00 (excl. tax)
This peony carries the same quiet grace and natural beauty as its earlier-blooming counterpart, Early Windflower, opening about a week later and extending this distinctive group’s presence in the garden. Introduced by Saunders in 1939, this hybrid offers an elegant, almost woodland character that feels both refined and relaxed.
The single white flowers are modest in size and strongly reminiscent of white anemones. Slightly nodding blooms are borne on tall, slender stems, often appearing in small clusters that lend a soft, drifting effect through the plant. Golden stamens warm the center of each flower, enhancing the bloom’s gentle simplicity rather than overpowering it.
Plants are vigorous and spreading, forming broad clumps with beautifully dissected, fern-like foliage that remains attractive from emergence through the end of the season. Like Early Windflower, this hybrid rarely—if ever—sets seed, a reliable distinction from Paeonia emodi and a helpful identifier for gardeners and collectors.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Late Windflower gently stretches the windflower peony season just a little longer. Its nodding blooms, finely cut, fern-like foliage, and natural movement bring a quiet sense of continuity to the garden. Even out of flower, the plant holds interest—proof that subtle, well-structured plants can leave a lasting impression.
