Chocolate Soldier
$52.00 (excl. tax)
This peony stops people in their tracks. Introduced in 1939, this midseason hybrid is prized for its extraordinarily dark, velvety flowers—among the deepest tones found in peonies—reading as rich burgundy to near chocolate red in good light.
Most blooms open as bold singles or Japanese-type flowers, with broad, dark petals encircling a dramatic center of golden-yellow anthers carried on reddish-purple filaments, all set against a vivid pink central disk. On mature plants, flower form can vary from single to semi-double, and occasionally fuller blooms appear, adding to the plant’s individuality and charm.
Plants grow to about 28 inches tall, forming a vigorous, floriferous clump with strong garden presence. From emergence through bloom, the foliage and stems maintain a dark, shaded character that complements the flowers beautifully. Rarely offered and consistently sought after, Chocolate Soldier remains a true collector’s peony.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Few peonies spark as much excitement in the garden as Chocolate Soldier. Its color feels almost unreal, its form full of character, and its rarity makes every bloom feel special. This is a peony people remember—and ask about—long after the season has passed.
