At Parkland Peonies, we specialize in herbaceous peonies — the classic garden peonies that thrive in northern climates. Hardy in Zones 3–8, they offer an exceptional range of colours, fragrances, and flower forms, including double, semi-double, Japanese, bomb, anemone, and single blooms. These peonies form the backbone of our collection and are valued for their strength, longevity, and reliable garden performance.
Herbaceous peonies are resilient, low-maintenance plants once established. They are naturally resistant to most diseases and insect pests and are typically ignored by deer and rabbits, making them an excellent choice for prairie and northern gardens.
In our climate, peony season generally runs from late June into early July. By planting a mix of early, mid-season, and late varieties, gardeners can enjoy an extended bloom period, with individual plants flowering for 7–10 days, weather permitting.
After bloom, the foliage remains attractive through summer before dying back naturally in fall. Cutting stems to the ground at season’s end helps reduce the risk of fungal issues such as botrytis, with fresh growth returning reliably each spring.
Peonies perform best with 6–8 hours of sun and rich, well-drained soil. An annual top-dressing of compost supports continued vigor. When well sited, herbaceous peonies are remarkably long-lived, often thriving and flowering for 50 years or more.
