This peony announces the season early and does so with confidence. Introduced in 1937 by Auten, this officinalis × chinensis hybrid blooms very early, producing exceptionally large, ruffled flowers in a rich, unfading dark red that holds its intensity even in strong sun.

The blooms are best described as a dramatic “five-layered single,” edging into semi-double as they mature. Broad, velvety petals surround a glowing golden-yellow center that creates a striking contrast and draws both the eye and early pollinators. The flowers have an open, energetic quality—bold without feeling heavy.

Plants grow to roughly 34 inches tall, with strong, upright stems and a tall, well-balanced habit. Vigorous and reliable, Red Glory brings size, color, and impact to the garden at a time when red peonies are especially prized.
